Our team

Ayesha Gavin

Ayesha is the founder and director of Heart of BSL and holds a BA Honours degree, a PGCE, level 6 NVQ in BSL, an assessor/internal verifier qualification and an MA in Translation. Ayesha teaches all levels of BSL as well as delivering deaf awareness courses, and CPD. She is also responsible for BSL/English translation.

Ayesha’s hobbies include reading, gardening, playing with her two crazy cats and spending time with her family and friends.

Liz Smith

Liz is our admin for Heart of BSL, and is the first point of contact for enquiries about courses. Liz started out as a student with Ayesha, progressed through to her level 6 with her, and then went on to study interpreting. Liz is now a qualified and NRCPD registered BSL-English interpreter and is a member of the Association of Sign Language Interpreters (ASLI).

Alison Hughes

Alison is our family support programme coordinator and teaches BSL level 1 and 2. As a mum to 2 beautiful Deaf daughters and a hearing son, Alison and her family have many experiences to share with you to guide you on your journey.

Gemma Mazza

Gemma teaches BSL level 1 and 2.

“Hello, I’m Gemma, and I teach level 1, after school and introduction to BSL. I have level 6 in BSL and a Diploma in BSL interpreting and translation. I am a registered sign language interpreter, and have been interpreting in the local deaf community for over 10 years.

I am short in size but have a big personality and I used to be a trampolining competitor and coach.”

Catherine Szymanskyj

Catherine is our equality and inclusion lead, working with us to ensure that our provision is accessible to all. A full time wheelchair user who is losing her hearing over time, Catherine started as a Level 2 student with Ayesha, having done her Level 1 elsewhere during lockdown. She is now mid-way through her Level 6. Catherine also teaches wider disability awareness.

Catherine loves reading, music, horses and dancing!

Myron Szymanskyj

Myron is our IT man, making sure that our website and shop are working properly.

Myron’s hobbies include all things computer, spending time out in nature, and cuddling shire horse foals!
