This BSL course is suitable for those who have achieved Signature or IBSL Level 3 or 4, or are assessed by us as signing at an equivalent level, and is the highest BSL learner qualification you can achieve, taking your skills to an advanced level. Upon successful completion of this qualification, you will be able to use and understand complex BSL in all types of social and professional interactions. This qualification also satisfies the language competency pre-requisite in BSL for anyone wanting to progress onto courses to become a BSL Interpreter or Translator. We deliver the course over 18 months, and regular contact with the Deaf community and/or regular exposure to BSL is also required from students outside of the course sessions (our tutor will offer suggestions and support in finding ways to satisfy this, but students must be able to self-motivate and go out and engage with Deaf individuals or groups).
The Signature qualification includes six assessments:
- An informal one-to-one discussion showcasing your use of persuasive language
- An informal group debate that demonstrates your ability to maintain a consistent argument following research
- A formal group meeting that covers negotiation
- A formal discussion, which involves researching a topic and demonstrating critical analysis
- A formal presentation, also showing critical analysis of a researched subject
- A receptive skills exam
There are eight themes in this qualification: Medicine, Education, Employment and Business, Finance, Politics and Law, Society, Media, and Science and Technology. You will study all eight topics, and exam topics will be assigned based on any of these. More information on the Level 6 qualification can be found here
