About us

Welcome to the Heart of BSL!

Heart of BSL (formerly known as Ayesha Communications) was created in 2010 by our founder and director Ayesha Gavin, in response to many enquiries about private tuition in British Sign Language and Deaf Awareness for individuals and small groups.

Since our humble beginnings teaching sign language on an informal, one to one basis, we have grown to a qualified, professional team, delivering accredited BSL courses up to degree level, working with clients such as Manchester Airport, Wigan Council and Greater Manchester Police to deliver deaf awareness training and much more besides.

In 2020, we launched a series of CPD accredited workshops which can be delivered face to face or online. These workshops aim to develop understanding and skills for specialist groups of people working with the D/deaf community.

We have had the pleasure of meeting many families to provide support for every aspect of the journey they make when a child is found to be deaf.

We offer BSL in schools, both as part of academy curricula, and after school clubs. These lessons are extremely popular, and aim to give children the basic skills to communicate using BSL. We can also offer the option of gaining an accredited qualification – BSL 101, which is the first part of the BSL level 1.

We work closely with our clients to deliver Deaf Awareness courses, covering many aspects of the Deaf experience and practical communication advice as well as explaining relevant legislation and the rights and responsibilities of service users and providers.

Ayesha Gavin is a qualified Internal Quality Assessor (Internal Verifier) and an NRCPD registered qualified British Sign Language Translator.

We are a registered and approved centre with Signature, the largest awarding body in Sign Language qualifications in the UK. We have proudly delivered Signature training for over 15 years.

In 2025, we celebrate our 15th birthday by rebranding Ayesha Communications as Heart of BSL. Our team remains strongly Deaf lead, and together we work to achieve realistic and effective aims for you and your community.
